Northern Stores - Alleged misuse of federal subsides

This claim alleges that The North West Company failed to pass on federal Nutrition North Canada subsidies in full, resulting in inflated food prices for customers in remote northern communities.

The Claim

Chief Darryl Wastesicoot (York Factory First Nation) and two other representatives from Nunavut have filed this claim alleging that The North West Company (NWC), which operates Northern Stores/NorthMart in remote communities, improperly retained millions in federal subsidies meant for consumers resulting in excessively high food prices in the north.

Under the Nutrition North Canada program (launched 2011), federal subsidies are disbursed to retailers—like NWC—to reduce grocery prices dollar-for-dollar in isolated northern communities.

Plaintiffs allege NWC kept a portion of those funds rather than passing them on in full to customers.

The Class
